Margaux Lenore Smith is a Toronto based artist working with oil paint, collage and watercolour. Her images often depict the entanglement of the human and natural world. Her playful and elusive figures convey states of perpetual transformation and codependency. Compelled by notions of desire and beauty, Smith works from an archive of personal images and found photographs from fashion, cinema and painting history. Using both formal abstraction and representational approaches to painting, she oscillates between restrained and chaotic actions. Smith works in a layered, durational approach introducing continual disruptive gestures as a method to elicit unconscious imagery.
